Email Addresses & Forwarding Rules

Your Virtual Private Server also provides email account and email forwarding rule capability. The Sendmail server is the most popular mail server on the internet, and can handle massive loads of mail with minimal overhead.

As of version 4.02 of the IA Modules eCommerce Software, the administrative tool called the "Email Manager" allows you to manage your own mailboxes and forwarding rules.

There are 3 parts to the Email Manager tool

  • Mail Domains
  • Mailboxes
  • Forwarding Rules

Mail Domains are specific domain names that this system is going to handle mail for. The system will attempt to route mail locally for any domain listed. A common problem for clients prior to launch is that they set their store's email address to an address that the system recognizes as local. If you have not launched yet (by changing your DNS info) and your store email address is set to something in the Mail Domains list, the system is routing it locally and not to the external mailbox. This problem is invalidated when the site is launched.

Mailboxes are also known as email accounts. Before you can create a mailbox you must first create a Mail Domain. You can then create mailboxes based on it. Mailboxes require a password to be accessed.

Forwarding Rules are like aliases for mailboxes. A forwarding rule can be an alias for multiple mailboxes. You can create a forwarding rule that forwards an address to local or external addresses. To create a forwading rule, you will first need a Mail Domain and at least one mailbox to forward to. You should not create mailboxes and forwarding rules with identical names. Instead, create one mailbox using a name like bob@mydomain.com, and create a forwarding rule like sales@mydomain.com that forwards to it.
